Dr Bill Wilson MSP (SNP), a member of the Rural Affairs and Environment Committee, has called on MSPs to support forthcoming Scottish Government legislation to ban the practice of hot branding horses and ponies, and lodged a motion welcoming the Government’s move.
Reacting to the Scottish Government’s announcement of its intention to legislate on the issue at the beginning of the next parliamentary session, Dr Wilson said, “I am delighted that the Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment responded so positively when I drew his attention to the issue some months ago. At the moment, hot branding is generally banned, but an exemption is in place to allow equine animals to continue to be branded. If approved by the Scottish Parliament, the proposed ban will bring the welfare of horses up to the standard we have set for other animals. |
