Wednesday, 14 July 2010

Dr Bill Wilson, MSP for the West of Scotland, showing his support for the Long Term Condition Alliance Scotland (LTCAS) “SMILE for self-management” campaignDr Bill Wilson, MSP for the West of Scotland, showed his support for Long Term Condition Alliance Scotland (LTCAS) “SMILE for self-management” campaign. SMILE (Self Management Improves Lives for Everyone) aims to helping people with long-term conditions make their own decisions as to how to run their lives.

Dr Wilson said, “SMILE’s person-centred approach gives support to people and their carers, helping them to take charge of their lives. It improves the quality of life, reduces the use of services and diminishes the barriers to work.

“80% of GP consultations are to do with long-term conditions. When people have the right information, education and support they can manage their condition and avoid health crises. This leads to improved health outcomes and significant savings for the NHS.

Many MSPs including some party leaders took part in a photo call on 17 June in the Scottish Parliament to get people talking about epilepsy.  Given this month’s sporting calendar with the World Cup and Wimbledon, it was appropriate for MSPs to hold up “Give epilepsy a sporting chance” cards.   This year the focus is on epilepsy and the under 25s. Dr Wilson said, “I am thrilled to be able to support this cause. With nearly one in ten people in Scotland suffering from epilepsy it is imperative that we work together in giving epileptics the support that they need. This includes educating everyone about the disease, so that suffers can live in a community where they are accepted and understood.”
