GM Crops Dr Bill Wilson MSP (West of Scotland, SNP) has praised the Scottish Government’s opposition to so-called GM (genetic modification) technology and drawn attention to criticism of it elsewhere.

Dairy Farmers Snubbed by Scottish Retailers

Dr Bill Wilson, SNP MSP for the West of Scotland, has expressed his disappointment to the Scottish Retail Consortium at their non-attendance at the Dairy Summit organised by the Scottish Government.  The idea behind the summit was to help build confidence throughout the industry by bringing together producers, processors and the retail industry.  Three of the four biggest supermarkets, Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury’s snubbed the chance to meet with representatives of dairy farmers.  Only Morrison’s agreed to participate in the summit.

Bill Wilson meets West of Scotland dairy farmers Hugh Neilson and David Robertson outside the Scottish Parliament on 29 April 2009

Dr Bill Wilson, SNP MSP for the West of Scotland, yesterday met dairy farmers from the West of Scotland, who expressed their concerns about the industry.  Dairy farmers represent around an eighth of the agricultural output in Scotland, accounting for £263 million.  In the last decade the number of dairy farmers has reduced by a third to around 1,350 farms.  Since the start of this year farmers selling milk have seen their prices cut by 4p per litre while the retail prices of milk and cheese have risen by 11.5% and 8.2% respectively in the past year.
