Dr Bill Wilson MSP (West of Scotland, SNP) has again highlighted calls by the BMA to ensure that the NHS in Scotland sources its instruments, uniforms and other items ethically.
He said, “To mark the start of Fairtrade Fortnight, the BMA's Medical Fair and Ethical Trade group has launched an information campaign telling doctors about the dangerous working conditions and child labour involved in the production of NHS medical supplies in Pakistan.
“I suggest people have a look at the Fair Medical Trade website. There’s a disturbing video showing the conditions under which many NHS supplies are produced. It makes the point, however, that simple boycotts are not the solution, as these might simply make poor people poorer.
“As I have pointed out previously in a parliamentary motion, the BMA has been working with the NHS in England to produce guidance on ethical purchasing. The nuanced and graduated approach suggested by the Ethical Procurement for Health: Guidance document, for NHS England makes good sense, and I hope that NHS Scotland soon adopts something similar.
“I am sure that the people of Scotland would not want their health to be at the expense of the health and wellbeing of children and the poor in countries like Pakistan, and there is no reason why it should be."
