Poor North Sea Oil and Gas Safety Record Further Evidence of Need for Alternative PenaltiesDr Bill Wilson, MSP (SNP) has repeated his call for the introduction of equity fines on the back of new information highlighting the poor health and safety performance of North Sea oil and gas companies.

Dr Wilson said, “The record of North Sea oil and gas companies over the past year is disturbing. Hydrocarbon releases are up a third on the previous year, which is bad news for the environment, while major and fatal injuries have almost doubled over the same period.

“More and more rigs, pipes and equipment are reaching their life expectancy so we need to do more to make sure companies are fulfilling their obligation to look after their workers and the environment. The Health and Safety Executive’s offshore division has said that the figures simply are not good enough and that they are going to take action with a new inspection initiative, which I certainly welcome, but I also feel that companies should be further motivated to improve their act.

Wilson Calls for Tough Approach to Wildlife CrimeWilson Calls for Tough Approach to Wildlife Crime:  estate owners should be held responsible for employees’ actions, more powers to SSPCA

Serious Assaults in Paisley, Johnstone and Renfrew Significantly Down as Scotland has Lowest Crime for 32 YearsDr Bill Wilson MSP (SNP) has highlighted the news that serious assaults are significantly down in Paisley, Johnstone and Renfrew as Scotland enjoys its lowest levels of crime for thirty-two years.
