In May 2007 Bill was elected as a member of the Scottish Parliament to represent the West of Scotland. While he has long been involved in politics, it was only with this recent election that he became a full-time politician. He was born in Paisley and educated at the universities of Glasgow, Aberdeen and Queen's (Belfast). He spent the first ten years of his career as a researcher in ecology, studying topics as diverse as arable land biodiversity, insect forest pests and small mammal ecology. He completed his research career by spending a year writing training manuals for university researchers. After a gap year, travelling in South America, he moved into information technology. In the years immediately preceding his election Bill was a statistician working for a public agency. He investigated aspects of education provision in Scotland.
Bill is currently a member of several cross-party groups and two parliamentary committees: the Equal Opportunities Committee and the Rural Affairs and Environment Committee.
Outwith politics his interests include the Scots language, hill-walking, travel, and reading.
